Another Snowy Day!

For the second day running the weather has played havoc with our school timetable. Today many children were still unable to make it to school and we took this opportunity to introduce those who did make it to some new apps on the ipad and make Christmas decorations as well as doing some money maths via a game of monopoly! Hopefully we will be back to normal soon!

A Quiet Day

Over the weekend Inverclyde has been battered by wintry weather that has brought snow and ice to many people. This meant that in P6/7 today there were 6 people! Consequently there will be no homework tonight.

Turning Back Time

Today we were so lucky to be able to travel to Paisley to visit a special shop from the 1930s. We took P6/7 and S1/2. The shop was set up to accompany the BBC series 'Turn Back Time'. We looked at all the old products and discussed what a shopkeepers life would have been like in the years before the second world war.

A Grand Day Out!

Today P6/7 are enjoying a trip connected with our look at the Victorians. The workshop is called Victorian Grand Days Out and looks at the time Queen Victoria herself visited the site of the kelvingrove art gallery for the great exhibition of 1888.




















We went into the gallery to look at all sorts of Victorian artefacts. We went in dressed in full period dress. Courtney had the privilege of being dressed as Victoria herself.


















The rest of us also got to dress up as maids, ladies and gentlemen. We strolled through the gallery in all our finery!

The Cliffhanger

I sat tense and sick, watching the round, jagged spike of metal thrusting up angrily into the deep blue sky.

I looked closely. Far away, at the top, I saw people strapped tightly to its smooth face.

They hung there, faces twisted with terror.

Suddenly, with one great blast they plunged, down and down, so fast my eyes couldn't keep up then stopped abruptly before shooting back up like a screaming rocket.

Down again.

And up.

And down. They crawled off elated and sick.

I watched them stagger off the ride and it was my turn to join the queue.

Transformed

"I'm fine" I croaked to Hannah.

Only I was the opposite of fine. I was practically drowning in sweat. My hands twisted in my lap like ivy going up a wall. My insides were slowly dissolving.

Pacing up and down I could not stay still. My legs were on overdrive. I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

"Are you sure you are alright?" Hannah said again. I didn't answer. My lips were dried up like crackers.

Then, slowly, the curtain started to rise. There were the lights, the audience, clapping, cheering.

Suddenly I was a completely different person.

A Damp Squid!

Slam!

"Aaahhh!" yelled Sean, shutting his mouth again to stop the water pouring in.

The colossal, evil beast of a squid was bearing down on him relentlessly.

"Okay, you pink pile of quivering jelly," he thought, "Let's do this!"

He charged, recklessly, adrenaline bringing needed strength.
His head felt like it was going to burst. He had to defeat this lunging, terrifying monster, but he knew it was futile.

His lungs burned and he felt his resolve fading. Soon it would all be over.

Somewhere a door was being knocked.

"Come on Sean, you've had your fun, bath time's over."

Hamburger Science

All last week P6/7 homework was to write an account of the journey of a hamburger through the digestive system. They were free to add pictures too.

Pupil of the Week

Big congratulations this week to two members of P6/7 who have been given Pupil of the Week awards. This week we were looking for pupils who were not only producing great work but were outstanding in their kindness towards other children.
Luckily, we had two such pupils; Isabella and Toby.

100 Word Story

On Monday we had a visitor in P7. Neil came and visited the school for the day from Falkirk. He joined in with our class lessons and was with us when we started our 100 Word Story project.
He went home and wrote his story and emailed it to us. It's great!

100 Word Story

Michael groaned in utter terror. Why was he always in this predicament? His heart thumped like a hammer on overdrive and he could feel sweat oozing down his brow. Ominous footsteps were growing louder. “Come on, you’ll live,” Michael whimpered to himself, shaking violently. “Aye, right!” he replied. The first signs of madness were arriving along with his impending doom. The usually ‘fearless’ boy glanced around, vainly searching for refuge. None was offered. Closer…Closing in! A shadowy silhouette entered through the rusty metal door… “BOY!” yelled the monstrosity before him.
“Yes, Miss,” Michael sighed, “I know, it’s time for maths.”

Play Rehearsals

Rehearsals for this years Christmas play are coming on well. This morning we were looking at the end of the play and practising positions for the finale.

Greenock Telegraph

Today our trip took us to the Greenock Telegraph. We have been looking at communication in class and today we were looking at one way that a message gets out - the local paper!
We visited the front desks where the advertising sales happen. We then spoke to the editor, journalists and went into the newsroom where the action all happens.
The Telegraph is the oldest evening paper in the whole of Scotland and is one of only 5 evening papers in the whole country.



We saw a room that few people get to see where copies of the paper from as far back as the 1850s are stored. Amazing to think that as we've been looking at the Victorians, the Greenock Telegraph was published whilst Queen Victoria was on the throne!







It was a really interesting visit and gave a few of the ideas about future careers in journalism.

P.E

We were doing basketball at P.E today. We did a warm up all together and then split into two groups to work on ball skills. We are making very good progress.

Bodies!

After looking inside rats last week this week we were looking inside the human body. We had a look at a model and then solved the mystery of the Egyptian mummy. The class read medical reports on the organs found inside the mummy and decided that they had died from taking too many herbal medicines that destroyed the liver.

100 Word Stories

This week we are writing stories. The only tools we have to do this is 100 words!
The stories will be about things, events or times in our lives that have moved us to happiness or sadness.
We are going to enter the completed stories in a competition run by the Readers Digest Magazine. The prize in £1000 for the winning entry plus £1000 for the school do there is a lot to play for. We started by writing the story without worrying about the number of words and then we will refine the story to 'boil it down' to 100 words.
The results should be interesting!

Pupil of the Week

Today big congratulations go to Jack who is our Pupil of the Week. Jack is producing great work in maths and language and has also been invaluable in his work in the school bank. Well done Jack!

School Bank Day 2!

Today was our second day of the school bank. Here is an assessment of how things are going from Jack, who has been involved in running the bank.



The school bank is fun because basically you are working with the people you are friendly with. It is a good idea to bank with the school because if your nearest branch is far away you can use the school bank every Thursday.
I have created an advert for the school bank. You can see it above. The idea behind the advert is to encourage parents, friends and pupils to bank at RBS, Cedars School. I chose a guy doing a handstand because it looks cheerful and quite fun and will hopefully attract people who may want to start banking with the school bank.
I think the school bank project is doing quite good because we have already banked nearly £400 for people.
