Writing Fractions as Decimals

Today in maths we are working on fractions as decimals. We've started the year looking at enormous numbers right up to millions and now we are going the other way and looking at fractions of whole numbers and how we can represent them as decimals, right down to thousandths of a second. We talked about how important decimals are in our world, especially in the world of sport.
Everyone is doing so well coming to grips with this tricky new learning!

Fractions

Today in maths we are looking at fractions and decimals. We are using a great little app called (appropriately enough) 'Fractions.' It gives examples and pictorial representations of various fractions and is a good way if reinforcing the learning from our class lesson today. Thanks iPad!

Today we are working through some of the early outcomes for our gymnastics badges. In order to pass we need to pass 8 out of 10 activities. We certainly made a good start on the vault and floor work.

Maths Bingo!

One of the great new apps on our iPads is called Math Bingo. It is a fantastic aid to mental maths skills and is already helping chidren in P7 'up-skill' in tables and other operations. When you perform well you gain a little creature known as a 'bingo bug.' The driving ambition of P6/7 is to beat Mrs Speirs, who is the owner (?) of 104 bingo bugs!
Top of the class so far is Robert who has 52!

Pupil of the Week

Big congratulations for this week go to Olivia who has made an excellent start to this year. Olivia was recommended by Mrs Speirs for her helpfulness with the new P1's as well as her hard work in her language and maths work.
Well done Olivia!

Chimney Sweeps on iPad!

Today we are discussing what life must have been like for a young chimney sweep in Victorian London. We were imagining all sorts of adjectives to describe their lives. Some of the pupils came up with some great descriptions. First we split into co-operative learning groups and put our heads together to come up with words. Then we used a fantastic little app called TypeDrawing on the iPad to 'draw' our chimney sweep pictures using only the adjectives we had come up with. The results are below.

Bloomberg TV

As you know, the school has been inundated with requests and interest from all over world since the deployment of our iPads. It has been great to be so involved in what seems to be a tipping point in education. One of the agencies that visited the school was Bloomberg TV.
You can watch the footage they took by following the link below.

Keynote Presentations on iPad

Today we were presenting our presentations we have made using the iPad. We have researched our material, made notes, structured and presentation and used Keynote to create slides for our presentation. We then connected our iPads to the projector and gave our presentations. The content was entirely up to us and the lesson focussed on our speaking skills as well as the language skills used to create a presentation. Here is Matthew's:

iPad information evening

Tonight we had many of our parents at school to learn all about the iPad. It was such an interesting night. Mr Speirs gave a short presentation on the iPad and some of the thingfs we have been using it for and then we gave gthe parents a chance to try them for themselves. A very informative evening and loads of parents came to support.

Brushes in Language

As promised yesterday, we have showcased below some of the 'Wanted' posters that the P7 group made this week using a fantastic iPad app called 'Brushes.' They were reading an extract from a novel by Leon Garfield called Smith. The story is about a young waif who discovers an important document and desperately tries to persuade someone to teach him to read so that he can find the secret that the document conceals. The class were asked to use Brushes to produce a 'Wanted' poster for the boy Smith. Here are some of the results:

Our Victorian Street

Today we finished our Victorian tenement houses. They look great on the classroom wall as a Victorian street! We will add all sorts of features to our streets we progress through our Victorian topic.

Victorian Houses

Today in p6/7 we were doing some art. We looked at the paintings of Victorian artist John Atkinson Grimshaw who painted autumnal scenes in dark colours and shapes. We then looked at the lines and shapes in Victorian architecture and began recreating our own for a street scene on the classroom wall. A good start by all that we will continue tomorrow.
