Pupil of the Term!

Today we awarding Pupil of the Term certificates to the children in each of the primary classes. In primary six the award goes to Toby, who continues to have a good year, and in primary seven to Lyle, who has had a very dramatic term, performing in film and opera. Well done to both!

Algebra Assessments

This picture shows an 'equation' we have made as a class.

In P6/7 maths we have all been looking at algebra. This week we have come to the end of our focus on it and it is time to complete a little summative assessment task. Many of the children have enjoyed grappling with maths that can seem abstract but is very useful in a variety of contexts. Over the unit we have worked collaboratively in groups and pairs, individually and as a class. We have presented our work in jotter work, orally, on the class whiteboard and on the iPad.
It has been a really interesting unit.

Horse Riding - the Dreaded 'Mucking Out!'

This week at horse riding we arrived to our final lesson for this term. It has been a great block of lessons and this week we we not only on the horses but also mucking out the stables. Some of the class had been looking forward to this moment for weeks (!) whilst others had been dreading it! Mucking out is a vital part of stable management and crucial to the keeping of a healthy horse.
The class were actually very good at it and really impressed the riding academy staff.

Ideal Homes

Our ideal homes project work is coming on well. We have teamed up with Mrs Offord in science and have added some 'green' goals and criteria to the project. Everyone is working hard on the house. Our exhibition should be excellent.

A couple if weeks back we were visited by Julia Belgutay of the Times Educational Supplement. She came into P6/7 for an afternoon and spent a long time chatting to us.
The issue of the TES for this week carries the article. It has come out really well including the pictures of Mete and Olivia!

School Bank Continues...

The school bank today was staffed by the P7 boys. The bank continues to be busy and secondary children returned forms today to open accounts with us too.

IPad Band

Today we were learning an old traditional Scottish lullaby called 'Time to Be Sleeping'. It was written about the highlanders who were removed from their crofts and lands during the clearances. We have been learning it as part of our 'How Important is My Home?' topic. We were thinking of what it must feel like to lose your home. This is a very sad little lullaby with a beautiful tune. We have been learning it on our iPads. This is a wee taster after only a half hour or so of practice.

Horse Riding

Today at horse riding we were using the simulators. These are like big robot horses that riders and jockeys use to train.
The class used them to practice trotting and cantering.

Ideal Homes Project

Between now and Easter we are looking at the topic: 'How Important is My Home?' It is a subject which has taken in philosophy, health and well-being and a look at the Highland Clearances in the novel 'The Desperate Journey'!

As the topic nears its conclusion we are beginning a new personal project at home which will culminate in a fantastic exhibition at the school.

Each member of the class must design and build a model of their ideal home. The home must be built using ideas we have talked about in the topic. It should be built at home, not be too big to bring into school - roughly the size of a big shoe box, and be handed in to school the week before the Easter Holiday.

Each pupil must accompany their model with a single A4 sheet, detailing the thinking behind each room in their house.

We will have a exhibition for parents, pupils and staff, in school on Thursday 28th April when each child will be available to answer questions on their designs and a panel of judges will select the winning entry.

This is just advance warning!!

Algebra!

P6/7 are looking at algebra in maths just now. Today P7 were working out equations using their chalkboard app on the iPad. It makes it very easy to see who is getting to grips with some tricky learning. They are doing really well.
