Choir

On a Wednesday morning we have a junior choir rehearsal up to interval. Today we were working on the Hide and Seek song from our Narnia play. We invited Megan (S5), who is Queen Susan, and also has a solo part in the song.
It is sounding good. We are almost at the stage of adding actions and stage direction. This is great!
You can view a clip of our rehearsal on the school YouTube channel here.

Welcome to a Great New Addition to P6/7!

Today we welcome a most exciting and potentially useful addition to our class... GarageBand. One of the latest Apple applications for iPad, GarageBand has been around for a number of years on the desktop and the fact that we now have it on each iPad in class is mind-blowing. This app puts the potential to create, record and share songs, sounds, voiceovers, poetry and so much more.
Today we began by having an introduction to GB and a 'getting to know you' session. Hopefully in the weeks to come we will be able to peer tutor the younger classes in this amazing app. Here are some of our comments so far...

Writing Competition

Today P6/7 entered a writing competition to celebrate 30 years of dedicated care by the staff of Ardgowan Hospice which is not far from the school. We were writing short stories about caring for people / things and some of the results were excellent. Keep an eye on the blog for some of our work. The prize is a laptop so some of us are keeping our fingers crossed. The competition closes in June and the winners are announced on the first day of the new school year in August.

How Important is My Home? Assessment 1

Today we were working in co-operative learning groups on an assessment video for our topic 'How Important is My Home?'

The assessment was to be a personal record demonstrating some of the questions we have grappled with during the topic and perhaps some of the answers we have discovered.

There are also two other assessments for different aspects of the topic to come, one of which is our Ideal Homes exhibition which is coming up on 28th April.

You can view our videos on the school YouTube channel here.

Baking: Pancakes

A day late, P6/7 are making pancakes. We are making them in practice for our ideal homes exhibition in April, when we will have them to offer visitors to the exhibition. We used the 4,3,2,1 recipe: 4 cups of flour, 3 cups of milk, 2 eggs and 1 cup of sugar. The results...
YUM!

Glasgow University Research

This afternoon we had an initial meeting with three researchers from Glasgow University. They are in school over the next month to conduct research into the effect that having the iPad has had on the learning of our children. They will be looking at P6/7 and P4/5 to assess the overall effect of the iPad on learning in our classes. The research will be interesting and we look forward to having them in school.

Trips

Leading up to our Ideal Home exhibition in May, we are doing some baking! For the next three weeks Mrs Parkinson will be teaching us how to make some delicious treats including belgian waffles and cup cakes. On the Wednesday before the exhibition we will make a fresh batch of each for the visitors to the exhibition on the Thursday.
If children could come to school in trip uniform on Wednesdays as usual and if possible, bring an apron, that would be great. Thanks

Glasgow University Research

We are undertaking some educational research in the upper primary (p. 4 - 7) in conjunction with Glasgow University. This is to assess the impact of using iPads both on teaching and learning. Those conducting the research will be interviewing teachers and pupils and observing lessons delivered both with and without using iPads.

Your help is needed! Before we can include the children in this, we need your permission for them to take part. Letters and consent forms were sent home today with the children. We would appreciate it if you could read and sign these and send them back in again. Participation is voluntary, and at no point will any child be identified by their name.

Pupil of the Week

This week we have two Pupils of the Week as we didn't award one last week. The hard working members of P6/7 who have achieved these awards have produced excellent work in recent topic tasks and also maths and language. Well done to Mete and Alex who thoroughly deserve their awards!
