A Powerful Return to School!

Today we return to school after a great October break. It was a great first day back. P7 were preparing the newsletter for the parents this term and we were getting back in the swing of school life. We also had a visit from Powerwise. They were helping us examine safe ways of using electricity at home. We looked at safe ways of using toasters, hairdryers, plugs and all manner of electrical devices. It was very useful - especially when we all use so many iPods, phones and of course, iPads that need charged!

History Day!

Watch out if you are in Cedars School today- we've been invaded! Pupils from P2-S2 are dressed up in costume from the time they are studying! Look at the photos and see if you can guess who we are learning about this term....

We are improving our chronological understanding and making links between the different periods in history.

Finally, Mrs Speirs explained the significance of settlers in Scotland, using our own Romans, Vikings and Victorians...

Our first history day has been a roaring success! Thank you to all parents for your efforts with costumes- the children looked fantastic!

Today we have learnt lots about heritage from one another, and feel inspired to learn more!

School Bank Progress

Man! What a busy term! Today, after the excitement of yesterday's Apple Store visit, we have the excitement of our pack arriving from the RBS for our school bank!
The pack contains our special Cedars School stamp, posts, uniform for the tellers and other goodies.
Hannah and Jamie's mum who both work for RBS are helping us run the bank and have popped in to deliver the pack to us.
The launch of the bank is on November 4th.

Dr What and the Victorians Rehearsals

Today we are rehearsing for our exciting Victorian play 'Dr What and the Victorians' which we will be performing as part of our history day tomorrow.
We are frantically organising our costumes and painting props!
It's going to be such a good day. Let's just hope it's dry.

IPad Band Launches at the Apple Store

After our presentations we split unto groups and had our first taste of music on the iPad. We formed four piece bands and rehearsed for about half an hour in different corners of the store. We then came back and listened to the results if each band. They sounded great!
The iPad orchestra for the Christmas play is going to be brilliant and the folks at Apple are keen to have us back to play in store nearer Christmas! Cool!

RBS Moneysense Financial Education

This morning we were lucky to have a visit from Linda Bardelli. Linda is from the 'Moneysense for Schools' programme which is run by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
We discussed the value of having a bank account, how interest works and how important saving is.
It was a really interesting lesson and a great preparation for the opening of our school bank which will take place in early November.
There was great excitement in the class when we realized that at age 11 we can have a cash card and use chip and pin to pay for things in shops.

Digital Revolution Mood Boards

This week at home we were thinking about the digital revolution and discussing the changes that it has brought. All the children in P6/7 belong to the first generation born in a truly digital age, as evidenced by our iPads!
P 6/7 used 'Moodboard' to create a presentation of their thoughts and ideas.

Above is Lyle's.

This is Ruaraidh's.

This is Brett's work.

Here is Isabella's.

Well done to all! Some great ideas!

The Art Revolution

Today in P6/7 we are beginning an art project connected with our topic. Our topic this year is this question:

'What was more important, the industrial revolution or the digital revolution'

In art today we are looking at form and composition. We are taking an image which makes us think of something old, industrial, even Victorian and making it into a silhouette. Then adding a background which makes us think of the modern digital age. The results are really exciting!
